Explore Forfar

There is so much more to this town, the capital of Angus county by the way, than just Forfar Loch.

Forfar was proclaimed a royal burgh by King David I of Scotland during the twelfth century, this charter being restated by Charles II in 1665. Forfar Loch is situated to the west of the town, and it is here that King Malcolm’s queen, Margaret, is believed to have established a chapel.

The loch was formed at the end of the last ice age as the melting glacier left behind a line of Lochs in the Forfar area. Forfar Loch was partially drained during the 18th century to extract shell marl, which was used as a soil fertilizer. The original loch would bee about 1.5km longer and 5m deeper.

The town has a lot of interesting links to witches. Their influences are still during the Halloween celebrations in town.

When exploring Forfar, you will find a lot amazing historic sites, easy accessible on foot and suitable for any fitness, and age, level visitors. Stop by in the town’s museum and gallery (it’s free to visit!) and collect the key from the newsagents to visit one of the most amazing monuments in town centre.
